Can People be Allergic to Fragrance?
First we must put the subject matter into its correct context -
People can have allergies to just about anything.
They can be allergic to the things they eat (ingestion), the things they breathe (inhalation) and the things they touch (direct contact). They can be allergic to flowers, grass, puppies, chocolate, jewelry, penicillin, chlorine, and even water. Thus, it goes without saying that people can be allergic to a particular fragrance.
But fragrances already permeate our lives.
If you think how many shopping malls there are on the planet, each of them has an average of 5,000 sq feet dedicated to fragrance and cosmetics. 7 days a week 12 hours per day people are testing fragrance, deodorants, and cosmetics.
Most new cars are infused with fragrance when they are manufactured. When you buy almost any car it has been infused with a particular type of fragrance in the factory. It all started when Rolls Royce realized years ago that the smell of a new car was very important to the buying experience. Now Daimler is taking it a step further with their $525,000 Maybach Zeppelin. According to Daimler they are including a “an imaginatively designed, extremely high-quality perfume atomizer, the only one of its kind in the world” that will “create a unique aromatic experience in the Maybach Zeppelin’s interior at the push of a button.”
One of the top 20 global brands, Singapore Airlines, overhauled their image several years ago. As part of the image remodel, they had a top perfumer create a new fragrance that was used by the female staff members, used in hot towels served before take-off, permeated through the airline through the fresh air system in the aircraft and used down to the aroma of cleaning products utilized to clean the aircraft. It is called “Stefan Floridian Waters” and the aroma is patented.
Procter and Gamble’s new Downy Simple Pleasures fabric softener includes Renewing Scent Pearls that are “innovative scent technology that makes scent last longer than ever in fabrics.” In fact infusing new clothes with fragrance is a huge business. Fragrances are infused into t-shirts, jeans and other apparel around the globe.
Virtually every household product has a fragrance in it; it’s even in your smallest room in the house – the bathroom! Toilet rolls have included fragrances for years.
Virtually every food product is enhanced with flavors. Flavors also have a fragrance to them.
So we are surrounded with "fragrance" in one way or another every second of every day.
